Christie’s Hong Kong Sets Asia’s Jewelry Auction Record

Another big Burmese ruby sale: This Burmese ruby and diamond Flora necklace by Bulgari earned $3.79 million.

On Nov. 26, Christie’s Hong Kong sold $111,337,808 million in jewelry—the highest-ever total for a jewelry auction in Asia.

With 309 lots offered, the fall Magnificent Jewels sale sold 86 percent by lot and 91 percent by value. Four pieces broke the $5 million mark, and 27 earned more than $1 million.

Vickie Sek, director of the Jewelry and Jadeite Department at Christie’s Asia, said in a statement: “Asian clients bid competitively with collectors from all over the world and helped achieve world-record prices for a ruby necklace, an orangey pink diamond, and a pair of natural pearl ear pendants.”

Oval-shape 12.85 ct. fancy intense orangey pink diamond (above); sale price: $4,950,720—a world record price for an orangey pink diamond, plus a world record price per carat ($385,000) for an orangey pink diamond
